Taylor has been working in weddings since 2016, when a creative outlet turned into a love for logistics and beautiful events.

About Taylor

If you’ve recently gotten engaged, you’ve probably heard the same advice over and over:
“Start with a budget.” But here’s the problem—no one actually explains how to budget for a wedding.

So couples either:

  • Pick a random number and hope it works
  • Start booking vendors and figure it out later
  • Or avoid the conversation entirely because it feels overwhelming

After planning hundreds of weddings, we can tell you this:
A well-built wedding budget isn’t restrictive—it’s what allows everything else to fall into place.

This guide will walk you through exactly how to build a wedding budget that feels clear, intentional, and realistic.

What a Wedding Budget Actually Is

Before we get into the steps, let’s reframe this:

A wedding budget is not just a total number.

It’s a plan for how your money will be spent based on what matters most to you.

Without that plan, it’s incredibly easy to:

  • Overspend early
  • Underestimate key categories
  • Feel like you’re constantly playing catch-up

With the right structure, your budget becomes a decision-making tool—not a source of stress.

Step 1: Determine Your Total Wedding Budget

Start by identifying your actual total investment—not a guess.

This typically includes:

  • What you and your partner have saved
  • Any monthly contributions leading up to the wedding
  • Contributions from family (clearly defined—not assumed)

A quick note on “average wedding cost”

You’ll see national averages everywhere, but they’re not always helpful.

Wedding costs vary dramatically based on:

  • Location
  • Guest count
  • Style of wedding

Instead of trying to match an average, focus on what feels comfortable and sustainable for your life.

Step 2: Identify Your Top Priorities

This is where your budget starts to feel personal—and where most couples skip ahead too quickly.

Ask yourselves:

  • What do we want our guests to remember most?
  • What elements feel most important to us?
  • Where do we not feel the need to overspend?

Common priorities might include:

  • An elevated guest experience (food, bar, flow)
  • Beautiful, cohesive design
  • Live music or high-energy entertainment
  • Incredible photography

Here’s the key:
Your budget should reflect your priorities—not someone else’s version of a “perfect wedding.”

Step 3: Understand the Major Wedding Cost Categories

Before assigning numbers, you need to understand where your money will actually go.

The main wedding budget categories typically include:

  • Venue + Catering
  • Photography + Videography
  • Wedding Planner or Coordinator
  • Florals + Design
  • Entertainment (band or DJ)
  • Attire (dress, suit, alterations)
  • Rentals (linens, furniture, tableware)
  • Stationery (invites, signage, paper goods)
  • Hair + Makeup
  • Transportation
  • Miscellaneous (this one matters more than you think)

One of the biggest mistakes we see?
Couples underestimate how quickly these categories add up—especially once service fees and taxes are included.

Step 4: Use Percentages to Build Your Wedding Budget

Instead of assigning random dollar amounts, we recommend using percentage-based budgeting. This keeps your spending balanced and prevents over-investing in one area too early.

Here’s a general guideline:

  • Venue + Catering: 40–50%
  • Photography + Videography: 10–15%
  • Florals + Design: 10–20%
  • Entertainment: 5–10%
  • Planner/Coordinator: 5–10%
  • Attire: 5–10%
  • Remaining categories: 5–15% combined

These aren’t rigid rules—but they give you a strategic starting point. From there, you can adjust based on your priorities.

Step 5: Build in a Buffer (Non-Negotiable)

If there’s one step you don’t skip—it’s this one. Set aside 5–10% of your total budget as a contingency fund.

This covers things like:

  • Guest count increases
  • Service charges and gratuity
  • Last-minute rentals or upgrades
  • Small details you didn’t initially think about

Without a buffer, even a well-planned budget can start to feel tight.

Step 6: Track Your Spending (Simply and Consistently)

You don’t need anything overly complicated—but you do need a system.

At minimum, your budget tracker should include:

  • Estimated cost vs actual cost
  • Deposit paid vs remaining balance
  • Payment due dates

A common oversight? Couples track totals—but forget about when payments are due, which can create unnecessary stress later.

When It Might Be Time to Get Help

Even with the best intentions, budgeting can feel overwhelming. You might benefit from guidance if:

  • You’ve booked your venue but feel stuck on what’s next
  • You’re constantly second-guessing decisions
  • You’re unsure what’s “reasonable” to spend

This is where having a clear, structured plan—or professional support—can completely change the experience.

A well-built wedding budget doesn’t limit you—it gives you direction.

It allows you to make confident decisions, spend intentionally, and actually enjoy the planning process. Because at the end of the day, the goal isn’t just to plan a beautiful wedding—it’s to feel present and confident every step of the way.
