How to Start Planning a Wedding

The Four Phases We Use With Every Couple

At Ivory Couture, we break wedding planning down into four distinct phases:

1. Foundation Phase — choosing a venue, defining priorities, building the budget, and booking key vendors
2. Design Phase — sourcing inspiration, building a Style Presentation, booking the remaining vendors, and planning rentals
3. Coordination & Reconciliation Phase — reconnecting with vendors, finalizing logistics, confirming layout, and building the final timeline
4. Wedding Day — full execution of everything decided in the first three phases

Full Planning & Design starts at the very beginning and walks through all four. Partial Planning steps in at Foundation with some of it already in place — a venue booked, maybe a vendor or two. Wedding Management picks up at phase three, once the earlier decisions are already made.

The package changes. The order doesn’t. Foundation always comes first, because everything after it gets built on top of it.

Why Foundation Phase Is the One Couples Skip

It’s easy to skip because it doesn’t feel like planning. There’s no venue tour, no mood board, nothing to picture. It’s just decisions — what actually matters most to you, what you’re realistically working with financially, and who needs to be locked in early versus who can wait.

But skip it, and here’s what tends to happen: the budget gets built backward, after money’s already been spent on the venue and whatever felt urgent early on. Priorities get decided by default instead of on purpose — whoever’s easiest to book gets booked, whether or not they’re actually who you wanted. And by the time the real financial picture comes into focus, options that would’ve been on the table three months earlier are already gone.

None of that is a couple’s fault. It’s what happens when the wedding planning process runs in the order that feels natural instead of the order that actually works.

What Foundation Phase Actually Includes

When we start with a couple, Foundation Phase covers three things:

Priorities, defined before decisions get made. Not a Pinterest board — an honest conversation about what actually matters to the two of you, so every choice after this one has something real to measure against.

A Budget Blueprint. A real, working budget built around your priorities and your actual number, not a guess made before anyone’s looked at the details. This is the piece most couples don’t do at all, or do too late to matter.

Key vendors booked first. Not every vendor — the ones your day depends on most. Everyone else follows once the foundation is set, not before.
